Abstract:  The book gives as simplified an account as possible of a complex and specialized subject. It describes the ancient temples, their use and function, their typology, their form, the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian styles, their sculptural and painted decoration, their construction and the materials used, the transportation of the stones from quarry to work-site, the ancient tools and the methods used for hoisting, setting and joining architectural members. The purpose is to present the ancient temples in a way that is easy to comprehend and enjoyable, so as to facilitate the approach of both educator and pupil to the architecture of the ancient monuments. The book is accompanied by drawings and 16 cards with photographs of the best known temples preserved in good condition throughout Greece.
